The auto upgrade tool fetches the latest version from our server and attempts to extract the files over your existing installation. This requires your web server to have write permission to the file structure, which many hosting environments restrict.

Solutions

Option 1: Use the Manual Upgrade Method

Follow our manual upgrade guide to upload the files yourself via FTP.

Option 2: Fix File Permissions

Temporarily make your files and folders writable:

  • Set directories to 755 or 775
  • Set files to 644 or 664
  • Your hosting control panel or FTP client can do this recursively
  • Try the auto upgrade again once permissions are updated

If your server runs PHP via CGI/FastCGI or PHP-FPM, the web server user may differ from the file owner. In this case, 775/664 or changing file ownership may be needed. Contact your hosting provider if unsure.
